O Earth! Why don’t You Listen

O Earth! Your innocent child is crying
And you see not behind?
“You bear and bear and bear drowsily
The burden of this groggy mankind.
What has made you silent?
Is this the happiness and sorrow
Or Science and Arts and Philosophy that borrow
The shimmering knowledge of mind inclined?”
For you listen not my tune suspended
That I am piping alone in the throng?
Why don’t you listen?
Have you gone mute or fancied deaf
Or are my cantos broken as leaf
Or do I sing of you disregard
Or you doom it not to go forward?
Who has afforded you unvoiced reward?

O Heaven! Your innocent child is crying
And you see not behind?
“You laugh and laugh and laugh at
The crowd of this dozed mankind.
Are you a monster gazing at your prey
Or are we the monster what you say?”
No, no, we can’t be monster.
We are chained by huge minister
Of Fate and Time not to chime.
We are fallen upon “the thorns of life
And bleed”; and you smile at out strife
To do in full and full destroy
Our little excellent glistening toy.
Or you are laughing your own delight
That you are near to greatest God
That we darkling Him cannot catch.
But He is with us
Forever, forever to lift and patch.
O proud heaven! Why do you smile?
We from you are away thousand miles.

Those days are not yonder far
When we live in a beautiful home
And together will sing of Holy Earth
The child, the young, the old and cold
All from Heaven and Earth and Tomb.
